On Saturday 12th August 2000 a torpedo was being loaded in the Kursk submarine during a major Russian naval exercise in the Barents Sea. The torpedo exploded, causing the vessel to sink and killing the control room crew. The ensuing fire then caused another seven torpedoes to explode, destroying the nuclear reactor and killing all but 23 crew who managed to stay alive for another six hours. A flash fire then burnt off all the remaining oxygen and the last few crew members suffocated. All 118 sailors and officers were killed in the disaster.
Not the most cheery of stories to turn in to a game, and possibly a little tasteless. However, no one bats an eyelid when we’re ploughing through the ranks of the Nazis and there have been films about 9/11, so why not a game about a real life submarine disaster.
The game will be an adventure and survival title for PC, Mac, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and will look at the tragedy of the submarine ship from a new angle.
“Kurks will definitely be a game for mature audiences looking for a unique and cinematic experience”, explained Jujubee CEO Michal Stepien. “There is still controversy surrounding the real fate of this Russian submarine and with our game we hope to raise and answer some questions.”
