A report of a fire on board a submarine undergoing work Friday afternoon at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery was in error, a shipyard official said.
A fire was reported at about 2:30 p.m. Friday on board the USS Norfolk, said Danna Eddy, public affairs officer at the shipyard. She said the sub was evacuated as a precautionary measure, but no fire was found.
Work on the ship resumed later Friday afternoon, Eddy said, and an investigation into the erroneous report is underway.
