Following years of delays Turkey's new-build submarine programme looks set to step up a gear, with construction expected to begin in the coming months, officials have confirmed.
Speaking to IHS Jane's at the IDEF exhibition in Istanbul on 7 May, Müjdat Uludag, head of naval projects at the Turkish Defence Industries Undersecretariat (SSM), said contractual negotiations are expected to conclude this month, at which point the SSM could issue a green light for construction to begin.
"During the design phase some problems emerged regarding the infrastructure and technical specifications of the submarines," he said. "We are now close to finalising negotiations regarding these issues and expect to resolve them in the coming weeks.
