UTC Aerospace Systems has contracted Proton OnSite to deliver its Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser cell stacks for installation on US, UK and French submarines.
As part of the multi-million dollar follow-on orders, the company will deliver 17 oxygen-generating electrolyser cell stacks.
Proton OnSite said they will support the US Virginia-class, the UK's Vanguard and Astute-class, and French Barracuda-class submarines. To date, the company has delivered 22 stacks.
"We have worked with UTC Aerospace Systems to develop and manufacture the most advanced electrolyser cell stack design."
Proton OnSite chief executive officer Robert Friedland said: "We have worked with UTC Aerospace Systems to develop and manufacture the most advanced electrolyser cell stack design for these navy customers over the past ten years.
UTC Aerospace maritime systems general manager Carl Nunziato said: "The Virginia-class submarine programme is a critical programme for the US Navy and we are proud to be a part of it.
"Proton OnSite's demonstrated ability to timely deliver quality hardware has been important to our success."
Jointly developed by Proton and UTC Aerospace Systems, the cell stack technology has also been integrated into commercial electrolysers under Proton's C-Series product line.
UTC Aerospace Systems is a unit of United Technologies, which designs, manufactures and services integrated systems and parts for the aerospace and defence industries.
