Israel has recently upgraded the weapons and communications systems of its first three German-manufactured Dolphin submarines to bring them up to the same standard as the three new submarines, which have air-independent propulsion systems, an Israeli Navy source told journalists on 29 March.
"Everything that we are putting into the new AIP submarines, we are also putting into the older three submarines," he said.
All of the submarines can take evasive action against an incoming torpedo threat, he said, but he would not provide further details about their torpedo countermeasures capabilities.
The source said the submarines have carried out "dozens" of covert operations off enemy shores to gather signals intelligence in 2014, with some operations lasting for weeks.
